It's snowing here and I'm sick of trying to work in the snow so I thought I would post a picture of the old barn on my place. The foundation is big rocks on the corners and cedar posts laid on the ground for the big tamarac posts to lay on, and it is braced inside in all directions. On the left side is a drive through for horses and wagons so the hay can be unloaded inside. The barn is about 50x60 and it appears that the stabling was about 40x25 and the rest was haymow. All the old barns in this district were built like this because there are no stones handy, and no hillsides to build into. This barn was likely built before 1922 when a huge fire burnt most of the district and 42 people were killed. It is built along the banks of the Pontleroy creek, which was the roadway to the farm for many years. The man who bought the farm in 1932, after the road was put in got so fed up trying to keep bridges built through gullies between the road and this barn, that he built a new house and barn in 1939, where I live now. When I had cows they used to take shade in this barn, other than that it hasn't been used for at least 40 years.
