I wouldn't thin out brome grass. The weeds will start coming in. Brome is a good weed killer because it does get so thick and root bound. A good shot of manure or other nitrogen rich fertilizer does wonders for heavy brome. Have you ever seen a brome pasture that doesn't generally look too good but has all those small tall green circles wherever a cowpie was deposited? I have CRP filter strips that have been in brome for 17 years now and the brome just isn't as tall and healthy as I would like it to be but I can't fertilize it so it's going to have to be short and pale for the duration.
