As to testing current drain with a test light, disconnect the ground cable and connect your test light between the cable and the battery terminal to complete the circuit. If the light lights even a little with the key off there is something draining the battery. Start disconnecting circuits one at a time. When the light goes out you have found the problem circuit. A Delco will work but have to rework the wiring where the regulator currently is to get the indicator light to work.
