Bret, I'm sure your phone does exactly what you want at a price you're comfortable with. That's fine if you're going to take or make an occasional call.
The new generation of phones really are a computer that happens to have a phone in them. I use mine way more than I use my desktop for business anymore. I drive truck, customers and other drivers don't want to wait 'til I get home to get documents from me, I'm also the zoning and code officer for our tiny Borough and I'm able to actually conduct a lot more business during business hours thanks to my smart phone. These phones take a lot more resources to operate that can only be provided by your carrier. In the event that a limited plan does not provide me with enough data minutes, I'm going to pay out the ying yang to buy additional minutes.
Plans make a lot of sense for the right reasons, and finding the cheapest plan that covers your need is apparently something your kids haven't decided to pursue yet.
