Did they start out with used mostly worn out balers?
Running one in place is a lot easier on a baler than getting dragged across fields, dropping in ditches and reeling in the occassional slow moving animal.
The old IH 440 we had wasn't on its last legs until it had over 100K bales shoved through it - and it wasn't that good of baler to start with. It took nearly 20K bales before the dealer finally got the knotters adjusted properly.
