We"re in the Central Flyway here and one of the migratory routes from Canada and points North to the Gulf Coast.
For the past I don"t know how many years about all that I could collect was the Lesser Scaup. Drakes had a brown head, some brown on him otherwise and a white breast.
I gave up hunting 35 years ago when I moved out of urbania. Was more fun to watch wildlife than harvest it.
Collecting fish stealing Great Blue Herons is a year round event, usually one visits, but this winter I have 3. Wasting their time as the fish are deep this time of year, but at least one will remain.
As of a couple of weeks ago a lone Merganzer visited and decided to stay. Usually I have a little guy, don"t know what it is, not a Merganzer, but a smaller fish eater with a curved beak. He didn"t visit this year.
This year no Scaups visited. Instead I was beset with almost a dozen Gadwalls that set up shop back in the November time frame and are still here. They like my Coontail Moss.
But today, I am out and about and lo and behold I see a couple of white chin straps out with the Gadwalls. This is a first time event for me. Looks like a drake and hen. Funny they are eating the same thing the Gadwalls are and aren"t harassing them like geese like to do.
Since the temp will freeze tonight and tomorrow night and the current wind is 20-30 mph, I guess they decided to interrupt their return trip for a day or two and wait for more favorable conditions.
