I think synthetics are great in the right applications. Internal combustion engines generate micro metal shavings, soot, and of course water vapor. All of which wind up in the oil. Good filters will remove a large portion of contaminants but does not do well with the moisture. You may not see it or be able to detect it without testing but it is there. The best way to get the most removed is regular oil changes. The extended intervals claimed by synthetics keeps building up the levels of harmful crud in the engine. We are talking the stuff the filters won't catch.
For those reasons, I will not use synthetics in an internal combustion engine. I change my oil every 3 - 5 thousand miles depending on conditions and age of vehicle.
For applications like compressors, gear boxes, transmissions, ect, synthetics are great. There is no water vapor from combustion present or building up
