A lot of newer lathes have a brake you can step on. Glad someone was nearby to shut the lathe off and your dad will be OK.
The high school I went to had a kid get his long hair caught in a lathe and a bunch got ripped out. He tried to sue the school despite being told numerous times he had to wear a hat and keep his hair tucked in. Further investigation into this students past revealed that he was injured in shop class in junior high and tried to sue that school. It boggles the mind that anyone would do something like that on purpose to try and get money out of it. What's even more disturbing is someone would try it a second time. You might be more likely to get a funeral or be permanently disabled.
