I used 2 6v batteries for my fence charger which is 12v and I regularly charged them with my 12v charger. As stated the charge is not linear. It's exponential meaning that it is fast at first when there is a big difference in voltage and slow at the end when there isn't.
You can feel the side of a battery to determine if it's overcharging. It gets hot and that internal heat is what boils the water off.
