Back in the mid 50's I used to watch "Highway Patrol" starring Broderick Crawford on television and he always took a bite out of something. I thought it was a candy bar but my Dad said no, it was a plug of chewing tobacco. Well, at 10 years old I wanted to try it, so my Dad bought a plug of Red Man and cut me off a slice with his pocket knife. He said "here, chew it, but don't you dare spit it out on your mothers good carpet." I started chewing and all of a sudden my mouth was on fire and full of spittle, and without warning my Dad slapped me hard between the shoulder blades and I swallowed it all. I turned every shade of green imaginable.
To this very moment, I still have the remnants of that plug of Red Man just as a reminder to NEVER chew tobacco. Smoke it yes, but chew it - NO WAY!
