When you pull the shifter into 4x4, the front driveshaft turns, turning the front axles, activating the automatic hubs. You must be at a stop, and then inch forward till you feel them lock in, then you're good to go. If you pull it in and hammer the gas, the slack in the system will snap the hubs in very hard and break stuff. The hubs will stay engaged until you take it out of 4wd and travel at least 10 feet in the opposite direction you were going when you pulled it out. I have a 92 F150 with original auto hubs and they still work very well, but you have to know how they work and be easy on the engagement.
