Common Kohler engine problem the lifters bleed off while setting and take some time to pump back up when started.
JD put a Kohler motor in a LX 172 frame and called it a LX173. Kawasaki and JD where fussing with each other so JD bought a bunch of Kohler engine to show Kawasaki that they could get motors else where.
Every single one of them would knock/rattle when first started. I mean real LOUD knock/rattle. The noise would quit after a few minutes of running but they sounded terrible when first started. JD sent out a service bulletin about it. I copies it and posted it on every LX 173 we had in stock. Ended up having to sell them at cost just to sell the first ones we got. Never reordered another one.
Pretty much did not order anything that came with a Kohler motor after that. You had to really want it and wait for us to order it after you would pay a deposit on the machine.
