I think you fail to note that to get the $5.00 a day wage Ford sent his people into his employees homes to observe their living conditions, kept tabs on their habits like drinking and smoking, how they treated their families, etc. The homes appearance and the workers dress was also rated. Those who failed Fords subjective tests didn't get the $5.00 wage.
He was engaging in social engineering. While I don't dispute Fords genius and work ethic, I also don't think it's fair to ignore his faults. Do you think the beatings his men engaged in handing out were right? Were his secret police the right way to handle things?
He was only magnanimous if it benefited him. Nothing wrong with that, but let's not paint him as a saint.
