The Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit was phased out in January of last year. This was the end of subsidys for ethanol. You could Google something like...Ethanol Blenders Credit History.... for more details if you like.
Yes, the October 2007 issue of National Geographic published an article on ethanol explaining the net energy gain of 30%. This 30% gain is on a BTU in versus BTU out basis so it accounts for the lower energy value of ethanol. There is no net energy gain with fossil fuel, all BTU inputs for refining etc are a net loss. My confusion is that you seem to imply the gain is a negative for ethanol and actually it is a positive. The gain is due to the solar energy utilized by the growing corn.
Yes, I know dairy and cattle farmers are unhappy - before ethanol it was the corn farmers who were unhappy. I think it can be said there has never been a time when all farmers were happy. In addition, I think it can be said there probably will never be a time when all farmers are happy.
