It is interesting that the oil companies don't ever talk about ethanol's biggest benefit to them - as an octane booster. Most of the gasoline produced now is 84 octane CRAP that won't work in any vehicle. They use the 115 octane ethanol to get the gasoline up to something that is usable in today's vehicles. I read last week that corn would have to get over $12/bushel to overcome the benefits of using the ethanol as an octane booster. Even if the blending mandate ended, they would still blend ethanol - no subsidies needed.
