IRS will not chase you if they owe you money - they'll remind you that you didnt file, but they don't really care.
Of course - you don't get your money either.
And if you wait three years, you lose the right to it... don't quite get that, but us citizens don't have a whole to to say about our laws.
If however you owe them, that never expires. And they'll keep adding penalties and interest to what you owe.
It's not a big deal if it's under 10 grand. But they will eventually put a lien on your accounts and/or take it out of your pay if you work for somebody else.
