I'm about an hour south of it, and can sit up in the tower all day watching trains. They did cover the Golden Spike Tower, I hope? I've been there enough that when the retirees that volunteer to answer questions get busy I will answer questions for people.
I do know one man who is on a train crew there.
The Lincoln County Historical Museum has a lot of information about the North Platte Canteen. I picked up the PBS video about it. They also have a tractor show there sometime mid-summer.
Buffalo Bill Cody's ranch house is literally right around the corner from the museum. There's Fort Cody right at the interstate, but it's a tourist trap, but I don't mind it because they are willing to admit it. There is a motorized diorama of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show there, built by a guy from Titusville, PA, who saw it as a kid.
Just south of the interstate they have a veteran's memorial, I think some 4H kids did most of the work to build it. They've also got a park on the south bank of the North Platte, when I was there they had a bunch of deer and such there. Got pretty close to a bald eagle as well.
During Rail Fest, they have model railroads set up in the National Guard armory. Some of them get pretty big and complex. Thomas the Train pretty much occupied the kids that were there.
If you like trains and history, and you're going across I-80, North Platte is worth scheduling an extra day for.
