Actually, I always preferred planes to have their failures before take-off rather than after. It sounds like you might have actually had a better day than it could have been!
It reminds me of a flight I was due to take off on with Republic Airlines (scary enough) and they announced we would have a slight delay due to a "minor maintenance procedure". It just so happened that the plane was VERY visable from the waiting area and it had mechanics climbing around in the engine and scratching their heads and throwing their hands up in the air - like, danged if I know what the problem is.
Luckily, they ended up switching us to another plane - which they then ended up to switching to an alternate airport because the brakes on it were scheduled for maintaenance and were not safe to land at the short field we were originally scheduled for.
