Michigan's weight limits are 2x what any other state has. Not only that, enforcement was always very limited. I had a friend that used to work at a trailer place downriver. They would get a brand new trailer out of Indiana, and then burn up #150 of rod welding reinforcements in. Back in the 80's, GM used to keep a small facility just north of the Ohio line. Trucks hauling castings from the Defiance foundry to machining plants in Michigan would transfer loads. 2 Ohio trucks in, 1 Michigan truck out. We had a short transition from the city street the plant property, the plant was higher. A few trucks took the entrance too fast, too heavy a load, and the trailers broke in half, spilling castings falling all over the street. And that was with "Michigan" trailers.
