We used to use a screen over the chimney but it was rat wire with like half inch square holes. Anything that'd get through that shouldn't hold enough heat by the time it got to the ground or barn to start a fire. But then I know what paranoia feels like and it's not fun worrying about things like that. Only once did it clog up when I put too much paper in the fireplace starting the fire and a large piece of burnt paper went up and clogged it up backing up smoke.
