I recently purchased a used pick up in South Carolina. Not only out of state but out of country!! Notified my insurance agent, who issued me an insurance card, flew to Charleston, purchased a S.C. temporary plate good for 30 days at a cost of $20. and drove it home to Ontario. The temporary plate has to be issued by the state you are buying it in. Be sure to carry the signed Bill of Sale, insurance coverage and registration with you just in case you are stopped. of course, I had to have a bunch more paper in order to export the vehicle from the U.S. and import it into Canada..
