Ford quit using the Taurus name and went to the 500 because the Taurus was getting a reputation as a fleet car.
They found out that was a mistake, they couldn"t sell the 500.
Apparently, the reason it sold as well as it did was because it had a reputation for being reliable and going pretty much forever with a minimal amount of work, which is why it was used in so many fleets.
