OK, it's believable. And I have seen a Dodge pickup on a note lot with a hole in the door like that. I was looking for a cheap ride for a work truck and this one was sitting there with a price on it. I saw the hole and said something to the owner. He passed it off with an "as is" remark. I later ran the VIN on one of those sites and found it had been reported stolen twice and had a lot of other history like that. That's when I found out about the reason for the hole.
It's real, and evidently easy to do. All the other stuff about information, etc. is probably just to make the story interesting.
I didn't buy the truck, it sat there for almost a year and was gone to Mexico.
