I think you need to get seeds and plants from a place with climate similar to yours. I can't think of a place with a more dis-similar climate from mine than Yankton South Dakota, so I've never ordered from Gurneys (although they sent me catalogs for years). We've got a fairly unique climate west of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon (I've never heard of anyone getting a Beefsteak tomato to ripen here), but have several seed and nursery companies that produce material that is suited to our climate. As far as tomatoes, for instance, we have only 2 possibilities here: Early Girl, and all those others that don't work.
