How can I call it modern day English. Easy the U.S.A is only a bit over 200 years old. The English we use is not the same as the English used in England or the land down under or a number of others. The English we use in the U.S.A is an English of it own and has only close ties to what is English in England. So if in England and you buy fish and chips what will you be getting. I know for a fact that it is not the same as here in the U.S. I know that because I have ordered fish and chip in England and guess what they where served on newspaper
