Are you sure it is a 98 diesel? If I recall correctly, they did not offer a 98 diesel. They had the first powerstroke in 96-97 (no intercooler), then intro'ed the new body style 99 superduty with the intercooled powerstroke in mid 98 calling it a 99.
Is this truck the older style body or the newer one?
300k on a diesel is just good broke in. It should be good for another 100K or double that if properly cared for (proper coolant SCA additive to prevent cavitation failure, for instance). Check the coolant for spots of oil floating...
Have a diesel tech look it over. If the engine is good, the brakes and clutch are straightforward.
