Hi Dunoon2, I've been wondering the same thing about Mangel Beets. I don't know if we're talking about the same thing or not. Mangel Beets were a long red beet kind of like a sugar beet. Most of it grew on top of the ground. Some were as long as 30" and 6" in diameter. I used to grow them and harvest them in the fall, store them in the basement of the barn, then chop them for cattle feed. They were real popular before silos came along for cattle feed. I would also cut the greens off and feed to the cows and I would get about three cuttings of greens a season before I would let them grow to produce huge beets. Then pull them, wash them, and store. They would last all winter long kept in a cool place. The cows loved them. I think it would be a great treat, even nowadays for small farmers to feed to cattle. I would think even for sheep and goats would work too if you cut them up small enough. You can still buy seed from seed catalogs like Gurneys, or at least the last I seen they were still available. They're a beautiful crop and easy to raise. Does anyone else remember raising Mangel Beets?
