I preferred my English Mastiffs for protection. Mastiffs are very protective of immediate family, but not aggressive. Which to me is exactly what you want. Had one or two salesmen (uninvited) think they would walk around them, dogs are a good judge of character.
English Mastiff, St. Bernard, Great Pyrenees, Bull Mastiff, etc all tend to intimidate just by their size alone. My dogs grew up with my kids, it is hard to describe how loyal and protective they were of my kids. I believe they would die defending my kids from harm. If it was the first time you were at my house, they would let you know how close was acceptable to be near my kids.
Only Mastiff I would caution you of is the Cane Corso, seems every week in the news they are killing their owner. Basically 150+lb killing machine.
