Well, is up to her. I picked up a Charter Arms "Lavender Lady", 5 shot .38 Spl a couple of months ago for my 78 year-old mother's night stand, and 130 gr rounds. Its very small, double action so she doesn't have to pull the hammer back before pulling the trigger.

Mom can simply aim, pull the trigger and, well. But at 78, it kicks a little much, and as she ages will kick even more, and she has arthritis, so that makes it harder. So now as "the owner" I have a lavender colored revolver that doesn't fit my style. Nice little revolver, very light, will most definately stop an intruder, but its lavender colored and I don't carry a purse or wear lipstick. I could almost like Johnny Cash's song "A Boy Named Sue", but not my style. Its only fired 5 rounds, and now will take back to Cabela's used gun library and see what they will take for it with plans of a trade. And I will check to see if they will order me a Taurus Tracker 991 .22 Magnum for her instead. Its still a .22, but the magnum rounds give it a little more umph, are a bit louder, its double action with an easy to pull trigger, holds 9 rounds, and its physical size makes it look much bigger than it is. It weighs a lot more than the .38 Spl though, and thats a consideration as well. The first thing you want to do, is scare the intruder away if possible, and when things are moving fast, like a home owner drawing on him or her, their main thought will probably be to get away, and its physical size should cause that. But, if it doesn't, well, its got a very easy to pull trigger, and a .22 Magnum will do the job at close range, even if it takes a few easy fire of 9 rounds. My mother is 78 and can handle the .38, but I want her to be comfortable as well.

Good luck, and put some thought into your decisions that inlude the cost of ammo for it, whatever they may be. Try pricing ammo for a Taurus .454 Casull or a S/W .500 once. Great for hunting, too expensive for plinking.
