What you describe her doing, would be regarded as highly foolish with the high strung thoroughbreds we deal with as retirees that find a new purpose in showing, hunters/jumpers.
I'm not sure if that is a common practice with other breeds or situations, and certainly no insult intended, but with no way to control, no bridle, no saddle, its just not a safe thing to do well at least with ones like these high strung ones. It reminds me of leading one by the halter, even in the barn its a bad move, which I have stopped people from doing in our barns at different times.
