A 4000 is certainly adequate for handling round bales. Faster hydraulics and front wheel assist would be nice, but don't preclude its use. My 4600 (same as your 4000, but 2 series newer) is my loader tractor, and handles 100's of round bales each year... mostly 5'x6' or 4'x4 1/2' high moisture bales. I would bet on your problem being a hole in a cylinder wall too... and I would rebuild it before buying a different one. (but I'd do all three cylinders)
