Why not shoot some full metal jackets and silver tips in your 06 to see if they solve the pelt damage. 243 soft points do about as much damage to small soft skined animals as your 06 simply because the 243 travels faster than 06. Everone has thier favorite rifle but the best rifle is the one you like. There is no"best caliber"but 30-06&308 come close and here's why. You can buy factory loads from 100gr to 220gr which no other cartridge offers. Some people's pet cartridges are wildcats or so specialized that many stores never heard of much less keep them in stock. Walk into any outback country store and I wager they carry 30-06 if they carry any thing and odds are they have 308 as well. I do believe 243w and 243w short mag are fine cartridges and would be my choice were I to own only one additional to the above. 300w short mag gets my 3rd caliber nod.
