You are exactly right. 243's are swell, actually great. They honestly are. But to your point if buying a new rifle, the economy of a .223 would be worth considering, especially if money is a consideration depending on what and where you are hunting with it.
Last week I was at a Cabela's near me and they put out a mountain of .223 in anticipation of black Friday. A mountain. They had deals on Herters 55gr in bulk up to 1,000 rounds was going for about 25 cents per round, 27 cents per round at 500 rounds.
