Hands down favorite for me is Remington Model 7 in 7MM-08 Remington. Moderate-read non-existant recoil, flat shooting and enough powder to use on most US game other then Moose and large bear. A short action short barreled rifle for me up here in the brush with the abilty to reach out if needed. Can"t go without mention of the old 30-30 and 30-06. Read some REALLY good reviews on the Ruger American Rifle and will likely get 10 year old daughter one next year in 7mm-08 or .308 unfortunantly, darned kid shoot left handed! Finally, and based solely on my own and family personal experience the .243 is a fine caliber but I really preach to the kids it a shot critical rifle. IMHO you had better catch some bone because it will poke a very clean hole in soft tissue and you may get a runner. Good luck
