The steel yards wouldn't want to be bothered with every Tom, Dick and Harry bringing in a couple tons at a time. Obviously the scrap yards make a profit. They probably separate all the different metals and turn it in smaller pieces before delivering huge amounts to the steel yards. That's why clean and separated scrap brings a higher price.
