The Waukesha motors where fine. I have a Oliver 1655 that we have worked the heck out of. Never had any issues with it. The rod problem was solved with an updated rod bolt. The problem was the worse on the 1855. I did the rod bolts on mine 25 years ago. They basically changed them to grade 8 bolts.
You need to talk to a true Oliver mechanic. I was luck in that we had a real good local dealer. I got mine lined out before they closed. There are a few updates that make the Waukesha 310 engine pretty much bullet proof.
