I bought about 25 boxes of 12 gauge shotgun shells of various pellet sizes for $3 a box a couple of years ago at a garage sale. I don"t know how old they are, and the guy who had them said his father-in-law had them for a real long time before he died. The shells have paper or cardboard tubes, but the shells and boxes all looked perfect--no evidence of ever being wet or damp or being poorly stored.
They mostly seem to shoot fine, but I have had two shells come apart at the base when I shot them in an automatic shotgun. There was no pressure blast out the back end of the shotgun, but with the end totally popped off the rest of the metal part of the shell, the shotgun did not cycle right. I had to pull the rest of the shell out of the chamber with my Leatherman pliers, as I could not get them to come out with my fingers. The two offending shells came from the same box, and were one after another. Since then all of the shells have worked perfectly.
I checked the shotgun over very carefully, wondering if somehow the bolt might not have pushed the shells all the way into the chamber. It looked like it was working properly, and after the two problem shells, it never did it again.
I was sure glad I had ear protection on, as it might have been kind of loud when the back end of the shells came off.
A little scary, but I am still very glad to get the shells for so little money. I will continue to buy old ammo when I find it, if I can use it and it looks OK.
