Yeah and I've had to fix many screw-ups made by Union workers. Your anecdotal story works both ways.
I was a garbage container truck driver in NJ in the late 60s. NON Union. Then we got taken over by the Teamssters and I was forced to join. Guess what? MY skills did not improve.
Later on I worked as a tree climber for Aslplundh. I was then forced to join the IBEW. Guess what again? I gained NO new skills. Just forced to pay dues.
I later worked for a John Deere dealer. Non union shop. Then a union came around and tried to arrange a take-over. My boss - a self-made millionaire and prior chicken farmer told them that if they got in - he'd retired and go out-of-business. Did the union care? Heck no. They tried to get in anyway. Gee wiz - I guess if they HAD gotten in - I'd be a better diesel mechanic now?
I quit the Teamsters and the IBEW and am still glad I did. Over the years I've had opportunities to correct many goofs in construction - made by Union and non-Union workers.
