Promotion could have come several ways. One would be a shortage in the unit caused by a SGT being wounded or kill or absent for another reason, like emergency leave or busted for misconduct or pending court martial.....AWOL
Could be that he was on the list and made the promotion while in country (buddie's son made his SSG there that way). Could be for actions that warrented the promotion. You will just have to wait to find out.
US Army Rangers are now considered part of Spec Ops, lowest level. All are jumpers. Long time ago right after Viet Nam Ranger was just one more punch in your ticket for promotion as an officer ot infatryman. At that time most Ranger units were Ranger in name only and were in fact just regular infantry units with most soldiers not being ranger qualified. Like the 1/16 Rangers (Iron Rangers is what they called themselves) assigned to 1st ID forward in Germany. We called em "rusty Rangers". It was just a regular Mech INF unit.
