Yours is a familiar story. I'm sorry to hear another. I know some folks that are past being able to work and relied on the stock markets for there retirement. They've had to dramatically downsize their lifestyle. Think Enron.
I HAVE NOT gotten the returns from the stock/bond markets that you once heard of. 3 x's in the 30 years I've been investing I've lost all the gains and some of the principal.
I supposedly "did it right" by investing regularly, diversifying, mutual funds, some individual stock, some bonds. I'm not impressed. I think the BTO's that understand the system shear the sheep, us, periodically.
I believe investing in the markets is in effect putting total strangers in charge of your money. I also believe that no one will take care of your money as well as you will.
I started putting some money into real estate and rent houses. That's a whole other set of issues BUT at least I can go put my hands on them. If SHTF I'll have a place to live. SO far they have lost some value on paper but the rents are going up. It's the on going income I want any way.
