I'm sure there's a lot of embellishment for entertainment's sake while leaving out a LOT of details. I agree that these guys probably "stole" or "borrowed" ideas from others and improved upon them. That's what innovation is all about. It's evolutionary. If the only product that could be sold was the original inventor's idea, we'd be stuck in the mud in more ways than one. It's still going on today. A lot of the features on your computer (hardware AND software) were "stolen" from other companies, Xerox in some cases.
Say what you will, but I don't think we'd be the powerhouse we are today without those "greedy" men.
