I've always had a hard time believing Deere 'invented' the steel plow, that all there was before his steel plow was wood like they try to make us believe. Maybe in the little area around Grand Detour wood plows were still used and no one knew about the steel plows being used elsewhere. Communication and transportation in those days wasn't what it is today and many farmers couldn't read or write. His blacksmith business maybe only covered a five mile radius at first so maybe his steel plow really was a big hit in a five mile radius of his shop.
