I have a 2006 F350 with the 5.4 and it is what it is. The diesel sure would be nice when pulling that cattle trailer, but I couldn't justify the expense up front. The mileage with the 5.4 is pretty awful, maybe 12 with a tail wind, so again the diesel would be nice (although if you're doing real calculations on cost per mile remember to figure in the difference in price between gasoline and diesel fuel - about 11% in my area.) But again, the up front cost is a killer, not to mention the added maintenance expenses. So if you need the power and want to spend the extra $$, you get better mileage as a added benefit. But I'm not sorry I stuck with the 5.4 for my needs, it certainly won't win any races, but it does the job...
