This spring I bought a 2007 F-250 shortbox extended cab with the 5.4L and 4.10 diffs. I use it for a work truck, pounding up rough logging roads, usually with a full slip tank of diesel, a few pails of oil, and a few hundred pounds of tools. It also pulls the gooseneck shop trailer around. I'm happy with how it's been handling it. Not gobs of power, but holds its own. Just rather thirsty. I get around 12-14 mpg (imperial). Never checked with the trailer on.
Two things to really watch on the 5.4L; Change spark plugs regularly, and have a good mechanic do it. Truck had about 130,000km on it when I did them. I broke 5 of them. Got them out with the extractor tool, but wasn't much fun. And if an exhaust manifold starts leaking, get it fixed sooner rather than later. I left mine too long; warped the manifold so badly it couldn't even be milled. Got a little expensive.
All in all, to me, the 5.4 is a pretty decent engine. It's treated me okay.
