I was a firefighter for 35 years. Our long time chief used to always say that you should have a "friendly" chimney fire every day so that you will not have a problematic one. As S2710 said, every day you get it hot enough to burn out any creosote that may have formed in the last 24 hours. Thus you are cleaning your chimney every day. Tests have shown that under poor burning conditions that you can get enough creosote accumulation to block your flue in just 48 hours, so obviously cleaning it even three times a season is not positive prevention.
