Alot depends on your stove, wood and chimney. My chiminy is in the center of my house, an outside chimney, one on a outside wall, has heat on one side and cold on the other, therefore is not a diseried chiminy. I have a woodstove insert in my fireplace with a 8inch round stainless steel liner, I have brushed it out 3 times in 9 years, it only has about half a plastic grocery bag of creosote for those cleanings, so I don't bother cleaning that one anymore. In my basement I have a wood boiler tied into my oil boiler flue, it's also 8 inch, but it's a clay flue, I fire that stove every morning way up into the over fire range according to my stack temp gauge, this burns off any creosote. I clean that flue 1 or 2 times a season, I get one full bag of soot out of it. I burn well seasoned hard wood, and I burn hot, rather than Letting the fire smolder.
