Royse, this is embarrassing, but thanks. The volume control (very hard to find in my opinion) was all the way down :) And I don't know how it got that way. I probably hit another key in my rough typing method (hunt and peck) that caused the problem without my even knowing what I did.
Don't even know for sure how I got it to work now. The mute control is easily seen and easy to maneuver, but that pesky tiny volume control doesn't show itself unless the mouse is EXACTLY in the right place.
