Call your own insurance company and get the coverage. I do it over the phone and then stop by the office to get the new insurance cards. It will cover you and the truck no matter where you drive it. Usually you need insurance from the state where you have your driver's license (but that may vary).
I live most of the time in NY but keep a truck and car in Michigan. When I go to Michigan, I call my agent in NY and put insurance on the vehicles. If fact - I cannot get the insurance in Michigan unless I get a Michigan drivers license.
Watch out for title requirements from whatever state you buy the vehicle (not where you're going to register it). I got in a mess with a truck I bought in PA. Paid for it, got a written bill-of-sale and a signed title. Then when I tried to register it in NY - no good!. That because PA law requires all titles get signed in front of a notary. I was ticked since I'm in NY - but NY honors whatever law exists where the title came from. So, I had to track the owner down in PA, get a new title signed in front of a notary. If I had been unable to find the seller - I would of not been able to register.
