It might work just fine it might not hard to say for sure. As for a way to make sure it does not rot away on you dip it in a good oil base paint and let it drip dry. Do that 2 or 3 times. Easy way to make a dip tube for doing that is a piece of PVC pipe with a cap on one end that is sealed an the other end have a cap to cover when not using it
