Long term planning isn't restricted to China. During the last recession it was mentioned that Japan does the same thing. It's more of an orental mindset. Thier governements think in terms of 20-30-50 years. Their companies do the same things, make plans and sometimes investments that will not make a return until long after current management is retired and maybe gone.
As far as companies and governments go with retirement bennies, most were set up at a time when most retirees didn't make it 10 years after retirement. Now they are living 15-20 years or more. Almost every place with these problems are union shops. And the folks that agree to the bennies had no way of knowing how peoples health and what advances in health care would do. Add in things like government deregulation and riseing cost. Hind sight is 20-20.
Mark only thing I see wrong with your statement is the global warming thing. If you look closley at the international agreements that so far have failed to pass muster with us they are designed to slow us down. The one would have effectively shut down all manufacturing in the US because it would have shut down all coal fired electric plants. That's what the one worlders want. They want everyone living at the same levels. It's a great dream but will never happen. National pride in many countries, religion and just the human desire to have more makes it impossible. Plus there is so much junk on the global warming side that I just can't buy off on it. Kinda like when the same folks were claiming that freon was destroying the ozone layer. A gas, heavier than air, that takes 50 years to break down and get way up there. Guess what in the late 80's freon had not been in used as the normal refridgerant for 50 years!
